drinking wine out of a can just doesn't hit the same
embarrassing to admit, because i thought i was above such tricks, but i guess packaging really does matter?!
Hello— this is a pre-written newsletter, although not by much. I’m sitting in a hotel room, drinking canned red wine and finishing up my girl dinner (southwest caesar salad, Kit Kat bar) while watching episodes of Dinners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. What an iconic Sunday evening!
I think this sort of scene is akin to like, any airport or going to a convenience/grocery store/bodega past 11 p.m., where it’s very much a sort of liminal space. Does time work the same here? Things feel very stationary, in a way. Nothing is totally real.
This has inadvertently become a movie-themed edition, I realized, but whoops! So be it.
For those of you who like to watch all of the Best Picture nominees for the Academy Awards, here’s where you can watch/stream all of them. Could I tell you, though, when the Oscar’s are, beyond just the month of March? That’s not my business!
A movie that is so unlike me to watch (but someone left the SyFy channel on in my house and I caught the majority of it) was the 2020 campy slasher movie, Freaky. The premise is: what if you took the body-swapping elements of Freaky Friday but a teenaged girl switches bodies with a serial killer instead of her mother? I had so much fun, it was so funny and camp. I was shrieking out of laughter and gross-out moments. I’m telling you, this will go the way of Jennifer’s Body and become a cult-classic one day, and I can’t wait to be on the “I told you so” forefront. Also, where is Vince Vaughn’s Academy Award?? I’m dead-serious. He really committed to being a teenaged girl. Could, for example, current Best Actor nominee Bradley Cooper do the same? Absolutely not, and you can’t convince me otherwise.
No recipe this week, but here’s your Astro Corner: Welcome to Pisces Season! The Moon also just went into Cancer on Sunday, so if things feel like, really emotional right now, that’s why. Some astrologers believe that people can be reincarnated and everyone starts off as the first sign in the Zodiac, Aries, and if they fully learn the lesson that that sign imparts, during their next life, they’ll be reborn as the subsequent sign. The last sign in the Zodiac is Pisces, and in theory, someone who is a Pisces is the wisest of all, because they’ve learned lessons from each sign, lessons that are built-upon from the previous sign.
A stereotype of Pisces is that they’re very emotional and weepy, and sure, that can be true, but I think it’s because they hold so much knowledge and depth; that can be hard to handle, I’m sure! So if you’re feeling a lot, ‘tis the season, and remember: let everything happen to you. No feeling is final.
There’s also a full moon later this week, in Virgo, or the Full Snow Moon. Virgos are a very intentional sign, who like order and communication. I love the dichotomy of Virgo and Pisces, and how they balance each other out: Virgo’s ground Pisces, and Pisces’ teach Virgo’s sensitivity. I encourage you to think like them both this week.
And lastly: today’s poem is “Reprieve” by Jenny George
Before the insects start to grind their million bodies, before impulse scatters the deer into the trees, before desire: there's a rest: The dawn and the day observe each other. The herd begins to move over the field, one shared dream of grass and wind. The small stones of their hooves in the stony field. I've exhausted my cruelty. I've arrived at myself again. The sun builds a slow house inside my house, touching the stilled curtains, the bottoms of cups left out on the table.
That’s all from me. Stay safe, take care, and see you next time.
