happy (?) eclipse day!
for the love of gritty, please wear appropriate glasses if you’re going to look at it
Hello— I wanted to get this out before the eclipse technically took place (2:20pm ET/11:20am PT), so let’s get started!
Ok, so various people have been texting me over the past few weeks asking, like, wtf is up with the astrology. Why are the vibes so intense & chaotic. Well, we’re deep into Mercury Retrograde, Aries season, and eclipse season. It’s a lot. We had a lunar eclipse last month and now we have a solar eclipse (get the right eyewear if you want to view it)! What does that mean for us? A lot of different things, but I would be really chill. Be easy on yourself and others. Rest a lot, if possible. Reflect a lot, if possible. Say “no”, especially if you feel burnt-out. Emotions are heightened (thanks, Aries) and it can be really tempting to give into your emotions, to go all-in, to be impulsive, to initiate things. I would caution against most of that. An Aries and Mercury Retrograde team-up would not end well, frankly.
What we really need to pay attention to is the Chiron cazimi, frankly, which is something that many people don’t pay enough attention to (to be fair, the solar eclipse is more buzzy). A cazimi is when something is in the same position as the sun. Chiron is a small planetary body (bigger than an asteroid, not quite a planet) and is named after the famous healer in Greek mythology, and thus, in astrology, is about unearthing and healing wounds. Astrologically speaking, a Chrion cazimi means that we need to turn our attention to healing wounds— Aries being prominent here can be helpful, because healing can require courage, and Aries has that in spades. If you want to learn more about both the eclipse and cazimi, I found this article by Aliza Kelly very helpful!
There’s been a lot of new music out lately (also, what is up with everyone releasing music about their Saturn return? I don’t hate it, it’s just weird). Last week in particular there was a ton of new music out: Kehlani’s new single “After Hours” (finally… a girl wants to be outside…. I love to be inside, but there needs to be balance in the universe between the Inside Girls & Outside Girls and I feared the Inside Girls had fully taken over…); Chappell Roan’s new single “Good Luck, Babe!”; and albums from Vampire Weekend (Only God Was Above Us), Tori Kelly (TORI.), and Lizzy McAlpine (Older). I can’t say I loved everything I listened to, but it was a musical buffet and I’ll take it!
This week’s recipe is for Creamy Baked Macaroni and Cheese, because it seems like a great comfort food for this chaotic week. I admittedly haven’t made this, so don’t come for me if you make it and hate it, but I just saw it on the New York Times newsletter and once I spotted the words “Stouffer-copycat”, I was hooked. I love garbage!! Also, for those of you who have a subscription, I wanted to call out that there’s extra entertainment: the girls are fighting in the comments over the usage of Velveeta! It’s hilarious. Would recommend reading.
Let’s stay on theme, shall we? Today’s poem is “Eclipse with Object” by Ann Lauterbach:
There is a spectacle and something is added to history. It has as its object an indiscretion: old age, a gun, the prevention of sleep. I am placed in its stead and the requisite shadow is yours. It casts across me, a violent coat. It seems I fit into its sleeve. So the body wanders. Sometime it goes where light does not reach. You recall how they moved in the moon dust? Hop, hop. What they said to us from that distance was stupid. They did not say I love you for example. The spectacle has been placed in my room. Can you hear its episode trailing, pretending to be a thing with variegated wings? Do you know the name of this thing? It is a rubbing from an image. The subject of the image is that which trespasses. You are invited to watch. The body in complete dark casting nothing back. The thing turns and flicks and opens.
That’s all from me. Stay safe, take care, and see you next time.
"don't let your emotions get the best of you" gross
*has been doing that* - thank you for the advice
