this party IS jumping like it used to
still riding that usher mini-concert + beyonce new music high
Hello— it’s the week of G/Valentine’s Day(s), which is my jam, so this issue will be curated accordingly. If you’re not down with love (a weird, camp-y movie that I do recommend!) feel free to skip, I’ll never know.
The beautiful thing about rom-coms is that while it seems like they’re perpetually an endangered species (especially ones of Quality), they’re never fully extinct. This month, here are four rom-coms that are coming out this month:
I can’t vouch for the Quality, but they all at least seem like a fun time, which is honestly what’s most important here.
And bookmark this Tweet like I did, because it’s a compilation of romance movies/shows that are due to be released in 2024.
I also want to see One Day, a romantic drama (not romantic comedy, as specified by trusted source, romance author, Bolu Babalola) series on Netflix, which yes, is an adaptation of the David Nicholls book, which yes, already had an adaptation in the form of a movie in 2011 with Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway. I’m a bit over these sorts of re-dos (see: Four Weddings and a Funeral and Mr & Mrs Smith), not because I assume they’ll be bad, but because I am desperate for new content!
And also, I just want to put this here, because so many men in Hollywood are like, “yeah, I wanna do a rom-com” but do any of them put in the work to envision said rom-com? Adorable RL Hobbit Daniel Radcliffe said, “hold my [ginger] beer” (he doesn’t drink alcohol, don’t ask me how I know that) and gave the people what they wanted: not only his desire to be in a rom-com (again!) but his hopes for a leading lady. And man, the Taste that jumped out…
Also, I’m not a huge Spotify person, and I want it to be crystal-clear that I did not choose the image for this Spotify-created playlist— I would never— but I have been listening to their Rom-Com playlist and it’s fun and cute. (Although them not including “My Boo”, a song I merely felt mostly neutral about until last night’s Half-Time show, is a travesty).
No recipe today, but for astrology: Mars and Pluto are both headed into Aquarius. What that means is that big change is coming— maybe not immediately, but the foundations are being laid. With hard work, poor systems and structures can crumble to make way for better things. We can hope, anyway!
Today’s poem: “She said to him” by Mahmoud Darwish
‘Night is a history of longing, and you are my night’ you said to me, and left me You left my night to me, and yours, and both so cold and I will be hurt by winter and memories of you and you will be hurt by the scent of my lilies in the air Too bad! I will love the first passer-by crying over a woman who threw him out as you did me We (the stranger and I) will care for our night and light it up We will furnish our little eternity. We will choose (the stranger and I) our bed and our feelings with care Perhaps we will recite together (the stranger and I) the love poem you dedicated to me 'Night is a history of longing and you are my night.'
That’s all from me! Take care, stay safe, and see you next time.
